We’re thrilled to announce that Teach For Zimbabwe has joined the Teach For All global network. Teach For Zimbabwe’s leadership development model focuses on influencing education systems to be inclusive and representative of the highest-needs communities, challenging social injustices that perpetuate inequity.

While Zimbabwe took a significant step towards removing barriers to education when it amended its Education Act earlier this year, children throughout the country continue to face enormous hardships, including poverty, hunger, trauma, and school systems that do not provide them with the education that they need to build a better future. Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zimbabwe Education Cluster estimated that of the country’s more than 3.4 million school-age children, at least 1.2 million (35%), would need emergency and specialized education services in 2020. This includes more than 853,000 children in acute need, such as children not enrolled in school, orphans and other vulnerable children, children with disabilities, and children living with HIV.

In January 2021, Teach For Zimbabwe plans to place 30 teachers in primary and secondary schools in Mashonaland East (Mtoko) and Masvingo (Chiredzi), areas where there is  insufficient government investment in education resources and overall school and community infrastructure, and where many children travel up to 10 kilometers between their home and school. Led by CEO and Co-founder Dr. Miriam Farai Siwela, who spent her formative years in one of the most impoverished areas of Zimbabwe, Teach For Zimbabwe employs a community-centered approach to realize its vision of ensuring an equitable education for children in the country’s most marginalized communities. Teach For Zimbabwe fellows will live in the communities where they teach and receive ongoing support from coaches who also live in those communities.

Teach For All is excited to welcome Teach For Zimbabwe to the network. We look forward to learning from and with its staff, teachers, and students and the communities where they work.
